The Types Of Depression Medication
There are many different types of medication used in the treatment of depression. Depression is a type of disease that can be very hard to diagnosed, and quite often is left untreated. Once you have been diagnosed by your doctor for depression, you have several different options for treatment. The drugs that are used to treat severe depression help to increase the brain chemicals called neurotransmitters and help improve your anger and emotions. There are four major types of depression medications that your doctor may recommend for you.
One of the first medicines on the market is called Tricyclic Antidepressants or TCA’s. These drugs target the chemicals norepinephrine and serotonin in the brain. They are used primarily for treating depression, but they have many side effects. ### These side effects can be anxiety, dry mouth, drowsiness, restlessness, constipation, difficulty urinating, weight gain, memory difficulties, increased sweating, dizziness, fatigue, weakness, muscle twitching, nausea, irregular heartbeat, and decreased sexual desires. Most of these side effects aren’t life threatening, and many of them disappear quickly and can be eliminated by lowering the dosage of medication you are taking.
Another of the depression medication drugs on the market is a Monoamine oxidase inhibitor or MAOI. These drugs aren’t typically the first choice of most physicians. They are mainly used for people who do not respond to other types of treatments. People using an MAOI have to adhere to a very strict diet, as this particular medication reacts to several different foods such as cheese, and also to alcoholic beverages, including wine.
Another depression medication that is new to the market is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, or SSRI. This medicine works by changing the serotonin in your brain. Serotonin and Norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors or SNRIs are another type depression medication that works by increasing the availability of the brain chemicals serotonin and norepinephrine.
Your doctor will help you to determine which type of medication you should use. Your life style, age, weight, and emotional history and the severity of your depression will also play a factor in the type of medication that you will need to take.
